What it is
Tian Ji is the star of moving parts — literally "heavenly mechanism". Where Zi Wei confers authority, Tian Ji confers analysis: the ability to see how a situation is put together and where the leverage sits.
The classics pair it with counsel rather than command. It is the advisor's star, and advisors are judged on being right, not on being obeyed.
How it actually shows up
A Strategist notices the angle everyone else walked straight past — the constraint nobody stated, the option nobody costed. In conversation it reads as being quick; in work it reads as being unusually good at the first 20% of a problem.
Tian Ji is also restless. Its association with movement is not only mental: changes of job, city, and plan cluster around it. That restlessness is the engine, not a defect — but it does mean the last 20% of a project can go unloved.
What tests it
Finishing. Analysis is renewable; execution is not, and the classics are blunt that Tian Ji thinks its way around work as readily as through it.
The second test is overthinking a decision that was never that complicated. Paired with 太阴 or 巨门 the analysis deepens; paired with 天梁 it steadies into judgment rather than churn.
