Gu Chen marks distance. Classically it is read as isolation, and the older texts treat that as straightforwardly unfortunate.
The more accurate reading is a person who does not need the group to feel settled. They are perfectly capable of company and simply do not require it, which other people sometimes experience as coldness.
The genuine cost shows up late rather than early. A life built entirely on self-sufficiency works well for decades and then needs something it never practised asking for.
