Self
Who you are underneath. Every other palace is read against this one.
What it covers
The Self palace is temperament and instinct — not what you do, but the shape of how you do everything. It is the first palace located when a chart is cast, and the other eleven are placed relative to it.
Read it first, always. A Wealth palace means one thing under a cautious Self and something else entirely under a Self that moves before it calculates.
How to read it
Look at the major stars sitting here — usually one or two. That is your baseline. If the palace is empty, it borrows from the palace directly opposite (Travel), and the borrowed reading is real, not a fallback.
Then look at what the classics call the 三方四正: the Wealth palace, the Career palace, and the Travel palace opposite. Those three plus the Self palace form the quartet that decides the overall shape. A single star in isolation tells you much less than the quartet does.
What it does not tell you
It does not fix behaviour. The Self palace describes the grain of the wood; it says nothing about what gets built. Two people with the same Self configuration and twenty years of different decisions are not the same person.
Open your own chart and read the Self palace first — everything else makes more sense afterwards.
